Growing towards a cashless society

It’s a pandemic that threatens to bankrupt businesses and kill various industry sectors. With COVID-19 no one’s immune and the movement towards a cashless society has grown significantly, and is set to continue as people rapidly change their spending habits and society accelerates towards cashless and limit contact. With new safety measures and the increase in the contactless limit introduced back in April, merchants are finding expansive ways to do business online or by phone and let cash payments become a thing of the past.

Embracing payments via mobile devices

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that more than 90 million people are infected with COVID-19 worldwide. Banks, restaurants and shops in the UK are now embracing payments via mobile devices, tapping into a vast new market of consumers who pay by wave of hand.

Cash is in decline and many feel it is time to “get rid of cash for good”. Debit and credit card payments coupled with the surge in contactless payments are now regarded as the go to way in which customers look to pay. The usage of cash has declined rapidly even before the pandemic. If you are a customer wishing to purchase something, with cashless you can buy any product, anywhere, at any time. Using your mobile phone, laptop or a computer, you can buy products and services at home and abroad for immediate delivery.

Customers making the switch to card payments

For nearly all of the businesses we spoke to after the first lockdown, it was their shoppers that made the switch to cards first and prompted them to implement new changes. Some individuals had concerns over handling cash but research reveals that one in four people prefer to use contactless payments because it’s quick, easy and they don’t have to handle cash. Contactless payments allow you to pay faster without the need to carry physical money, eliminating the risk of theft or loss.

Cash is dirty

Cash quite simply put is made of germs. This means that the money and cash you carry can transmit disease to others and under the current climate that isn’t good news. If you do come into contact with cash, it is advised to wash your hands when you have been in contact with money. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer is another option. In the event of a widespread pandemic , it is imperative to be prepared.
